JULY IS BEBE MOORE CAMPBELL NATIONAL MINORITY MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH, ALSO KNOWN AS BIPOC MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

Atlanta, GA (June 30, 2023) - July has long been recognized as a significant month to acknowledge and explore the critical issues surrounding mental health challenges and substance use disorders within Black and marginalized racial groups. As part of their commitment to Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, Silence the Shame, a prominent mental health advocacy organization, will host two virtual mental wellness seminars, Building Healthy Relationships for Mental Health, on July 12th and Calming the Stress Response on July 19th and a Community Conversation, Benefits of DEI for Black Mental Health, on July 18th, at 6:30 PM. In addition, STS will host Youth Mental Wellness COPE Clinics for youth ages 13-19. These events will provide safe spaces for open dialogue and support, fostering a sense of community and understanding.

Throughout July, Silence the Shame encourages everyone to explore how social conditions impact well-being. By connecting with others, sharing experiences, and normalizing struggles, celebrations, and healthy coping mechanisms, individuals can take proactive steps to improve their mental wellness. The organization emphasizes the importance of healing from childhood experiences, addressing work-related trauma, and cultivating healthy relationships to recover from mental illness, substance abuse, and chronic health conditions.

Contrary to common misconceptions, mental health encompasses more than just illness. Unfortunately, society often perpetuates mental health stigma, silencing individuals who struggle with various mental health conditions, grief, work-related stress, familial responsibilities, and health challenges. Furthermore, factors such as loneliness, isolation, racism, and poor social determinants of health have contributed to an unhealthy culture of survival within the Black community. Silence the Shame believes it is crucial to shift the focus from merely surviving to truly living and thriving.

Silence the Shame is dedicated to changing this narrative by amplifying the importance of mental wellness and destigmatizing conversations around mental health. Join Silence the Shame this July as they redefine mental health, promote healing, and empower Black communities to thrive.
