My Life is a Gift: Suicide Awareness Summit September 22, 2021 10:00AM EST

In 2019, suicide was the second leading cause of death for blacks or African Americans, ages 15 to 24.  In addition, according to a recent study, African American boys between the ages of 5 and 12 are more likely to die by suicide than any other age group. Unfortunately, racial and ethnic groups differ in their access to culturally appropriate behavioral health treatment, experiences of discrimination and historical trauma, and other factors related to suicide risk. Therefore, understanding racial and ethnic differences in rates of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide deaths is essential for developing, implementing, and monitoring culturally responsive suicide prevention efforts.

My Life is a Gift (MLG): Suicide Awareness Summit is designed to explore experiences of suicide in the BIPOC population from a community, faith, and family perspective to promote the development of culturally appropriate resources.  Join Silence the Shame for this virtual event to learn from the experts about suicide prevention, intervention, and meeting the needs of suicide survivors and survivors of suicide attempts (SOSA).

MLG: Suicide Awareness Summit Objectives

This year's goal is to provide a virtual forum for those who share interests and experiences in reducing health disparities in the BIPOC population, preventing suicide across the life span, and promote healthy strategies to improve healthy living in the Black community. At the end of the summit, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe techniques that individuals can use when people verbalize suicidal ideation and refer them to appropriate treatment opportunities.
  2. Identify and assess psychological risk factors of mental crises to improve outcomes and reduce the incidence of suicidal behavior.
  3. Describe the opportunities and challenges of implementing suicide prevention within the BIPOC community and solutions to increase participation and contributions in their community.
  4. Describe the impact of suicide on survivors and SOSA to improve care to those who have lost a loved one to suicide or attempted suicide in the past.
